Rayleigh wave dispersion
WebRayleigh wave energy is dispersive meaning that different frequencies travel with different velocities. More specifically, each frequency travels with a phase velocity that is mostly a function of the average shear-wave velocity of the subsurface from the ground surface to the base of particle motion associated with that frequency (wavelength). WebJun 22, 2024 · The Rayleigh wave attenuation coefficients at periods of 10 and 20 s in this study are within these ranges. The average Rayleigh wave velocities at periods of 10 and 20 s are assumed to be 2.95 and 2.92 km/s, respectively (Sun et al., 2010; Zheng et al., 2008), and the Q values in the study area can be estimated to be 363 at 10 s and 277 at 20 s.

WebThe dispersive nature of Rayleigh waves allows different frequency waves to travel at different velocity in a vertically layered medium and penetrate up to different subsurface depths. Generally, Rayleigh waves with large wavelength, i.e. low frequency waves, penetrate up to higher depth and reflect high phase velocity in the dispersion spectra because of the … WebApr 11, 2024 · Examples of calculations of the root of the generalized Rayleigh equation N (α) = 0 are shown in Fig. 2. Here we show the dispersion relations in terms of prescribed frequency of the process ω and the evaluated root α 0 (Fig. 2 a). Corresponding values of the Rayleigh waves phase velocity c g r = ω / α 0 are presented in Fig. 2 b.
