WebWe investigate the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a large box of aspect ratio Γ=32 for Rayleigh numbers up to Ra=10^9 and at a fixed Prandtl number Pr=1. A conditional averaging technique allows us to extract statistics of the LSC even though the number and the orientation of the structures vary throughout the domain. http://cgit.ins.sjtu.edu.cn/seminars/2024/11/15/distinguished-lecture-in-celebration-of-the-10th-anniversary-of-ins-on-inhibition-of-thermal-convection-instability-by-a-magnetic-field-under-zero-resistivity/1829

In fluid thermodynamics, Rayleigh–Bénard convection is a type of natural convection, occurring in a planar horizontal layer of fluid heated from below, in which the fluid develops a regular pattern of convection cells known as Bénard cells.
